What You Need To Know About Securing Stuff

If you have the skill and time, you can do your own securing, but you must use fasteners that are made for the purpose. Go to Safe-t-Proof.com or QuakeHold.com for good fasteners. Fasteners for heavy things like some furniture and appliances have to go into a stud (a good stud finder is helpful).

Or…you can hire a handyman, but don’t let him/her use fasteners that aren’t made for earthquake preparedness.

If you have a big house with a lot that needs securing, I know a guy who specializes in that – he was trained by Safe-t-Proof, a leader in fastener products. Just get in touch with me for his contact info.

There Are None – You Don’t Run Outside

In the Napa 6.0 quake almost 12 years ago (at 3:20am), one man jumped out of bed, only to fall and hurt himself twice trying to run out of the house (he should have stayed in bed until the shaking stopped).

If you’re in another room, crawl to the safest place to be, away from things that could fall on you. Good places are under desks and tables. Always get out of kitchen and bathrooms. If you have young kids to check on, go to them carefully – don’t run.

If You’re Outside

Find a clear spot away from buildings, streetlights, power lines, and some trees.* Drop to the ground and stay there until the shaking stops. Injuries can occur from falling trees, street-lights and power lines, or building debris.

*More on trees: trees on hillsides fall much more than on flat land. On more level land, it’s mostly dead or diseased trees that are likely to fall. Shallow-root trees like maple, spruce, and palm are more likely to fall. Most trees survive 7.0 quakes just fine.
