If you have the skill and time, you can do your own securing, but you must use fasteners that are made for the purpose. Go to Safe-t-Proof.com or QuakeHold.com for good fasteners. Fasteners for heavy things like some furniture and appliances have to go into a stud (a good stud finder is helpful).
Or…you can hire a handyman, but don’t let him/her use fasteners that aren’t made for earthquake preparedness.
