The Check Off List
You don’t eat the apple in one bite and you don’t prepare for a big earthquake with one project or one accomplishment. You make a list and take care of it one thing at a time. Try this:
- Have your retrofit checked. Will your house likely stay on the foundation in a major quake?
- Secure dangerous furniture/appliances/wall hangings with fasteners made for the job, not just what looks/sounds good.
- Get an automatic gas shutoff valve – a must for you, your neighbors, friends, family.
- Have an earthquake emergency kit in your vehicle(s), plus walking shoes.

We install automatic gas shutoff valves in the SF east bay for typically $315 – slightly higher in other nearby locations. Installation takes about 30-45 minutes, always done on Saturdays. We’ve installed over 4,800 valves in 19 years, and we use the Little Firefighter, state approved valve. If you already have one, good on you!
